I was recently contacted by a long-time client and good friend, to build a set of dressers for their master bedroom. I have known Jim and Amy for almost 7 years as they were one of my first clients when I started Sustar woodworks in 2012. I always feel a sense of pride when I can provide a service and product that a client truly loves. I have built over 10 pieces for Jim and Amy and so when Jim called in early July I was excited to again provide my service.
Jim and Amy know my work so well that our design consults have become a formality. This time was no different. Jim gave me the dimensions for an armoire, dresser and two night stands, showed me a picture of a piece he liked and told me to get to work. A week later I sent over the initial designs. Jim’s response was, “Looks good get building.” I’m not even sure he looks at sketches anymore. I know from experience that Jim and Amy love simple lines, substantial and well-built furniture and that’s what I used to inspire the design.
I wanted the design to look heavy yet well-proportioned. Drawing upon the creed of the arts and craft movement I incorporated reverse-tapered legs into the design. The reverse-taper delivers a wide stance that provides strength and stability while the thinned taper adds an element of grace.
Continuing with the arts and craft theme, the side panels were a stile and rail design. The Legs, acting as the stiles, were connected to the oversized rails framing the flat panel with exaggerated reveals. The oversized rails and exaggerated reveals provide an aesthetically proportional look to the large legs.
Thick tops were added to the design to match the overall appearance. The tops over hang the case on the sides and front to match the reveals of the side panels. A large chamfer on the bottom edge adds elegance and refinement to the design. To complete the design, stile and rail doors and drawers were added for a timeless look.
The set was made from solid cherry and finished with a chestnut stain to match an existing headboard. Simple black drawer pulls were selected to match the clean lines of the design. Overall I am happy with the results. What do you think?
